Young Business Roundtable: Japanese Business and Social Etiquette

Last night, we were fortunate to learn about Japanese business and social etiquette from guest speaker Takaho Iwasaki at our Young Business Roundtable event! We discovered how important hierarchy is in Japan, and how to visit a business and exchange business cards. We even learned about how to behave and where to sit during pau hana, and even asked about who gets to have the last piece of gyoza!

After the session, participants stayed to network with one another and share experiences from their travels to Japan.

Mahalo Takaho for sharing your valuable insights with us!

HJJCC Aloha Beer Co. Event

Last month, members and friends gathered at The Hi Brau Room for a special HJJCC Aloha Beer Co. benefit event. They enjoyed food, beverages, music, games, and a lucky draw, as they mingled per table to comply with restaurant guidelines.

Thank you to Aloha Beer Co. Kakaako for hosting us and to everyone who attended for supporting the HJJCC and our programs!

Virtual Furoshiki Workshop

That's a wrap!

On Tuesday, March 16th, Jadyne Yomono, owner of Lotus Wrapping Co. taught us the art of Furoshiki wrapping with reusable cloth wraps to reduce waste by eliminating single-use wrapping materials. She taught us a number of different furoshiki wraps for boxes and a bottle of wine, along with how to wrap a t-shirt without a box! 🎀

Thank you Jadyne!

Blood Bank of Hawaii HJJCC Week

For the week of March 7th - March 13th, we partnered with the Blood Bank of Hawaii to be the sponsoring organization to help fill blood donation appointments at all of their donor center locations!

A big MAHALO to all who donated blood during HJJCC Week. Here are some photos of our Board members during their appointments.

Even if you couldn’t make it during our week, please consider scheduling an appointment. Every donation helps!

HHHRC Supply Drive

BIG MAHALO to our members and friends who donated to our supply drive to help the Hawaii Health & Harm Reduction Center support our community. We gathered hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and first aid kit products, in addition to water bottles, clothes, socks and masks!

We truly appreciate your generosity and support. Thank you!

New Year, New Connections Virtual Pau Hana

HJJCC New Year New Connections.png

A new year means new connections and that’s exactly what our members got out of our Virtual Pau Hana on Wednesday night. Presentations were given by board members with committees so attendees could learn about what we do and how to get involved.

After our speakers, we did breakout rooms to network and talk about various topics relating to the HJJCC and our events. Committee meetings will be open, so look out for an email with details on the upcoming meetings!

Young Business Roundtable: Financial Planning

It's a new year and a great time to set new financial goals. Our members were able to get an introduction and refresher on personal finance. Financial planners, Steve Adams and Dane Sako, were able to share their expertise and answer all of our questions. In addition, our members were able to catch up with each other following the presentation.

Thank you to our members and speakers for a great first YBR event of 2021. We hope to see you at our future events!

Hawaii Foodbank Senior Food Box Packing

“Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” - Charles Schulz

Our members came out in force again, filled with the holiday spirit in support of our kupuna on Oahu and Kauai! We helped the Hawaii Foodbank pack over 2,100 “healthier choice” food boxes for our local seniors in need. We had a lot of fun and are grateful for the opportunity to give a little of ourselves to those who need it most.

Bowling for Tots!

On Friday, December 4th, we had our first in-person HJJCC Membership event of the fiscal year! Although we had to stay a little more "split" compared to our previous events, our members brought their holiday spirit with them to Aiea Bowl for our Bowling for Tots event!

We collected toy donations for Toys for Tots while members spent the night bowling in groups of five or less. Some teams left more pins standing than others, but we all had tons of fun!

Thank you for donating to our Toys for Tots drive!

Adopt-A-School Day at Honouliuli Middle School

We were excited to hold our Adopt-a-School Day project with the brand new Honouliuli Middle School as they prepare to welcome their first full class of 6th grade students! We helped by creating mask wearing and social distancing signs and placing those along with markers and arrows throughout their campus. We also festively decorated bulletin boards, assisted staff with power washing, and prepared 32 “survival kits” for Honouliuli MS teachers and staff!

Young Business Roundtable: Navigating Through Change with Jeff Berlin

Sometimes we need a reminder that the only constant in life is change, and that’s not a bad thing. Last week, we had the opportunity to listen in and engage with Organizational Development Consultant, Jeff Berlin, on how to navigate through change. Jeff shared a simple change model with members on how we could identify, analyze and plan for the expected and unexpected changes in our lives. Members stayed after to network, catch up, and pau hana with one another in smaller break-out rooms.

Mahalo to Jeff and everyone who was able to attend, we’re looking forward to our next YBR event and hope you’ll be able to join us!

Virtual Speed Networking

We had a great time meeting members of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce at our joint Virtual Speed Networking event on Wednesday, October 28, 2020! Members of both organizations were paired up in breakout rooms for four, 10-minute networking sessions. All participants were entered to win prizes, including gift cards from Rainbow Drive-In and a HJCC 120th Anniversary polo shirt. Congratulations to the winners!
